CAMPBELL: Mary
Anne Campbell (father Donald, mother Ann Rankin) from Carnoch, Glencoe,
came to Australia on the HILJA in 1854 with her parents Ann and Donald
Campbell, and brothers and sisters. They settled at Inverleigh,
Victoria. She married Thomas Johnston in 1867. Still tracing
Campbell descendants.
HEMPHILL: WILLIAM HEMPHILL (aka Billy or Irish Bill)
McCULLY: Hannah
Johnston married William J. McCully in New York in 1877. They have five
children: William 1879, James 1880, Harry 1883, Charles 1887 and Sarah
Jane 1890. We have been able to contact her grand-daughter Irene
Chapman, still living in Clay Center, Kansas.
RANKIN: Thomas
Johnston married Mary Anne Campbell in 1867 in Victoria. Her mother
was Ann Rankin from Slate, Ballachullish. We still have her Gaelic
Bible dated 1814. (photocopies taken back to Glencoe Museum September 2011). The Rankins also came to Australia and lived at
Ondit, just north of Colac, Victoria, not far from the Campbells at
Inverleigh and the Johnstons at Linton. We are still searching for
their descendants.
RICHARDS: Mary
Jane Johnston married Hugh Richards in Ireland, travelled with her
family and husband to the US in 1873 on SS INDIA. We have contact
with her great grand-daughter Lyn Crowder in California (Hi Lyn!!)
RUTHERFORD: Margaret
Johnston married Thomas Rutherford in New York 1875. It has been
wonderful to find her Artley descendants on the 150th anniversary of
her birth in October 1853.
And of course…
JOHNSTON: James
Stewart Johnston, born 1814 (?Antrim?), his parents were Molly and
Thomas Johnston. An elderly aunt said they were only in Ireland for
one generation from Scotland. No other details.
